Covenant Eyes Review: The Best Internet Porn Filtering Software or Waste of Money?

Covenant Eyes Review

First Things First: Do I Even Need A Porn Website Blocker?

Over the past few years running this site, I’ve received thousands of emails and blog comments from guys who are still struggling with porn addiction, as well as hundreds who have managed to overcome it and completely turn around their life.

What’s the difference between the successful group and the struggling group?

The difference is in their mindset, strategy and planning.

And part of that planning for success includes choosing the right web filtering software. Web filtering, while not a CURE, is an essential TOOL in your quitting toolbox.

Having a good porn filter in place can mean the difference between a tough day at work turning into either a spontaneous healthy workout (see replacement habits LINK) or a marathon porn relapse.

Here I’ll review the pros and cons of one of the most popular internet porn filter/accountability software out there: Covenant Eyes.

(Note: This article only focuses on their personal computer software, not their apps for Android smartphones, iPhones, and iPads)

What is Covenant Eyes and How Does it Work?

Web-Filtering

After you download and install the app on your computer (Windows or Mac), Covenant Eyes monitors and restricts all your web traffic. If you’re not logged in, you can’t access the internet at all.

Once you log in, you’re able to see only websites within your filter level. You can choose different filter levels when you set it up:

Sites will be allowed or blocked depending on which filter setting you choose. For those who find the smallest things can trigger a relapse, the stronger filters are recommended.

Accountability

This is where their software really shines. Most internet filters are just that: filters. Covenant Eyes goes one step further with their accountability features.

For couples where one partner is struggling with porn addiction, accountability reports are – in my opinion — the best feature of the app. You can set up Covenant Eyes to send automatic reports to your partner to show what you have been up to, which highlight any “questionable” sites and searches.

And while some people might say: “but where’s the trust in that?” I would answer:

“If you’ve been hiding your porn addiction for months or even years, you’ve already broken that trust. This can help you rebuild it by letting them see what you’re up to.”

If you’re a single guy and don’t have an accountability partner or a friend you can send the reports to, you can find one on the YourBrainRebalanced forum.

Pros and Cons of Covenant Eyes

The bad:

  • Paid subscription: If you’re tight on cash, the monthly $9.99 might scare you off. That said, in my opinion it’s really not that much for the peace of mind it brought me.
  • If you’re tech savvy, you might find a way around it. There will always be weaknesses in software, especially if you’re the hacker type. If you are the type of person who uses linux and are completely unfazed by command prompts and CSS, you may be able to find a way to get around the app. However, for the average person, it’s more than adequate protection.

The good:

  • Customizable filter level: screen out only what you don’t want to see. (or maybe I should say ‘what you WANT to see in the moment, and need help to stop yourself!’)
  • Can’t be uninstalled without administrator permission. For couples, make your partner the admin. For single guys, have your friend enter a password or give your password to your online accountability partner.
  • Doubles as a productivity app: You can also add non-porn sites to your list of blocked sites.

Comparison with other internet filtering software

I’ve tried most of the other internet / web browser filtering software, including free and paid subscriptions: K9 filter, NX Filter, Qustodio, and too many browser extensions to count. There’s some good ones (in fact I used to recommend K9), but there are a few reasons my current favorite is Covenant Eyes.

I found that in the “heat of the moment” the other porn filters were just too easy to disable or find a workaround.

The other reason is the accountability reports. I’ve written before about the value of having an accountability partner for quitting porn.

Covenenant Eyes is going to not only keep your content filtered, but also send reports to your accountability partner about what types of sites you’ve been looking at.

And trust me: it’s much harder to make the decision to let down your accountability buddy (your wife, your best friend, or an online accountability partner) than it is to let yourself down.

This accountability aspect alone will make you think twice before you click that questionable link that will send you down the porn rabbit hole.

(For families who want to protect their young children from questionable content on the web – which is outside the scope of this article – Net Nanny comes highly recommended from many sources)

Conclusion: Covenenant Eyes is the best web filter — at the moment

While it still has its issues, Covenant Eyes gets my vote over other porn blocking software because of its customizability, accountability features and security.

They are always releasing updates and fixes for bugs and workarounds, and they care about their mission, which includes helping people overcome addiction.

Is Covenant Eyes for me?

If you have been struggling with porn for a while, maybe it’s time to add some strategic controls into your life.

For a couple — where one partner is struggling with porn use — this is a no brainer purchase.

Sign up, have your partner get the email reports, and you’ll see your ability to fend off urges increase ten-fold.

I also recommend Covenant Eyes as a porn blocker for a single guy who is struggling on his own. In this case I would suggest pairing the accountability software with an accountability partner (you can find one online on the YBRB forum here – LINK).

If money is super tight and $9.99 a month is too much for you, well – this might not be the right software for you. You have to think about how much it’s worth to you to get over this problem. For myself and many other guys, it’s well worth it.

In the end, internet porn filters and accountability software like Covenant Eyes are a TOOL, not a cure. They can be immensely helpful in your journey to quit porn, but the success of your recovery is ultimately up to you.
